Conductor - Dr. David Martynuik

             An accomplished composer, arranger, and scholar, David Martynuik’s passion for music has taken him across North America, from the classroom, to the concert hall, to the football field. Dr. Martynuik performed as a clarinetist in many venues and was also an accomplished instrumental music director before pursuing his PhD in music education at Florida State University. He currently teaches classes at Indiana University of Pennsylvania in theory, education, and music education where he is also Director of the IUP Marching Band, Assistant Director of IUP Bands, and Assistant Director of the Orchestra. Under Dr. Martynuik’s tutelage, the IUP Orchestra performed at the 2009 PMEA Convention in Valley Forge, PA and the 2011 MENC Eastern Division Conference in Baltimore, MD, as well as other tours throughout the mid-Atlantic region.

 

Organist - Dr. Christine Clewell

             An accomplished organist and scholar, Dr. Christine Clewell is an assistant professor of organ and keyboard at IUP, where she teaches applied organ, applied keyboard theory, and class piano. Dr. Clewell studied organ at Susquehanna University with Susan Hegberg and with Carol Teti at IUP, and earned her doctoral degree from the University of Michigan in Sared and Liturgical Studies under the tutelage of Robert Glasgow. She is an active church musician as an adjunct organist at Zion Lutheran Church in Indiana, Pa. Her extensive experience includes suest appearances in the historic Kotzschmar Series in Portland, Maine, and as a soloist at the Washington National Cathedral. Dr. Clewell also serves as the music department’s keyboard area coordinator and is the faculty advisor to the Carol Teti Memorial Organ Scholarship Committee.

 

Indiana University of Pennyslvania Music Deptartment

             The Department of Music at IUP has a rich history dating back to the founding of the university over 100 years ago. Despite this longstanding history at the university, the Department of Music continues to look toward the future, with the recently renovated Cogswell Hall. This home to the Department of music includes state-of-the-art technology, expanded classroom and practice room spaces, a piano laboratory, rehearsal halls, and a well-appointed music library. Despite these assets, the greatest departmental resource is its faculty, which is composed of more than 30 members. Each of the 300 music majors have the opportunity to study with a specialist of his or her own instrument or voice and take academic coursework from professional musicologists and theorists. In addition to coursework, the Music Department ensembles provide performance opportunities for hundreds of university students each semester. A staff of resident conductors directs the activities of the Symphony Orchestra, four bands, three choruses, two jazz ensembles, and various chamber ensembles. A distinguished artist-faculty represents a wealth of professional performing experience. Recitals featuring resident faculty members and visiting artists are presented regularly for the university and the Indiana community in addition to various national and international performances. Designated an All-Steinway School, the Department of Music at IUP is a fully accredited member of the National Association Schools of Music.
